Mile 224. Freakishly cold.
Cruising altitude today at 5800-6200 feet elevation creates its own microclimate. Today featured snow and freakishly cold. I’m breathing smoke like a dragon. And I’m wearing every piece of clothing that I own.
I lucked out with a group of very clever shelter-mates. These outdoor survivalists know how to sustain a fire with wet wood, trap the fire heat with a cleverly hung tarp, and cook bacon & steak over the fire. They’ve got skills.
I’m sleeping tonight with all my wet hiking clothes, electronics and water filter - so they don’t freeze over night.
I will be happy when I walk out of the Great Smoky Mountain Natl Park tomorrow. Yes, she’s pretty - but she makes you pay for those views.
